The
New River, which has been estimated to be between ten
million to 360 million years old, begins in North Carolina
and flows north through Virginia and West Virginia.
The New River is nationally known by those who enjoy
the outdoors and offers excellent fishing (smallmouth
bass, musky, flathead catfish, and walleye, among others),
canoeing, rafting, kayaking, rock climbing, and bird
watching opportunities.
Canoe
the New Outfitters primarily services the New River
below Claytor Lake Dam. In addition to excellent fishing
opportunities that can be found on this 50+ miles of
river, there are numerous rapids in the Class I-II range
and several strong Class II rapids. Novice to experienced
boaters will find the New River a beautiful and challenging
river to canoe, raft, and kayak, and birdwatchers will
relish the Virginia
Birding and Wildlife Trail that has several
site nominations along this portion of river. Our trips
offer incredible scenery and some of the best paddling
in Virginia.
The
renown Appalachian
Trail crosses the New River at the HWY 460
Bridge in Bluff City (Pearisburg), Virginia, and offers
some of the best hiking opportunities in the southeast.
Pearisburg
is a recognized trail-town on the Appalachian Trail,
and just beyond the stop is the beautiful Angel's Rest
portion of the Trail.
Numerous
parks, campgrounds, lodging, and outdoor activities
line this section of New River and make it a great place
for outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds to enjoy. |
