March '06 - "Wind is Friend" ![]() When Jimmy and Lewis arrived at the shop this morning, we had a good idea what was in store for us.....WIND!!!! Forecasts had gusts up to and over 50 mph. Jimmy and Lewis are from Richmond, and I told them that there was a good shot that the wind would activate the fish, but it would be gamble. The plan was to run a short trip and if the wind became a problem, we'd pull off and call it a day. Jimmy and Lewis are gamers, so we headed to the put-in. We loaded the gear and hit the river to find white caps; something you rarely see on a river system with flow. It took me roughly ten minutes to row to the other side of the river, and Jimmy and Lewis were looking at me like I was crazy. On the far side of the river, there was a good mud line formed from the wind and we began targeting it. About mid-day Jimmy stuck a stout 4lb fish that just topped the 20" mark. Later in the day, we found the fish to be on the opposite bank as Jimmy stuck another 20" fish. Lewis then got in the game and stuck a fish that measured 20.75" and weighed a stout 4lb 4oz. At the end of the day, Lewis had a fish completely engulf his bait that went 21.25" and 4lb 6oz. In all, we landed 9 fish on the day; however, four were over 20". The wind had indeed activated the "big fish" into a feeding frenzy and resulted in one of the best fishing days of the year. Our motto; "Wind is friend!!!"
