April '06 - "Big Fish" Hunting
photo
Scotty and Jimmy are two excellent clients of mine, but also good friends. In the 15 trips they have done with me in some combination over the last three seasons, they or their boat-mates have landed exactly 15 citation smallmouth 20" or bigger. Their spring trip this April was no exception. After a phenomenal "big fish" trip in April '05 for Jimmy that included two 20"-ers with the biggest going 21.5" and weighing 4lb 13oz, it was time for Scotty to take the "big fish" reign, and he did not disapppoint. The first day of our trip began very slow for us which is typical for an early-spring trip. We had one 18.5" fish after the first several hours of fishing in very overcast, cold, and damp conditions. Both Jimmy and Scotty fish hard no matter the bite, and that was the case as I swung the raft into a "sweet spot" and Scotty laid his bait right in the middle of it. As soon as the lure hit the water, the fish ate it and the fight was on. It was a quick battle, and we landed the "big nasty," a 22.5"-er that weighed in at 5lb 10oz. At lunch that day, we had exactly two fish, but that is often the case when hunting in the early-spring for the brutes. About 4pm that afternoon, the bite turned on and we landed 10 nice fish in the last 2 hours of fishing. On the second day of their trip, the weather brought high blues with wind and sun. The morning was once again slow when Scotty stuck another "big fish," a 21.5"-er that weighed in at 4lb 10oz. This fish barely made in the boat b/c of guide error, but we'll save that story for another time.  Scotty chipped in with another 20"/4lb+ fish to give him three citations on the trip. Uncle Jimmy didn't have much to say about Scotty's accolades, and I look for the game face to be on as they visit the New again this fall for more "big fish!!!"
