April '06 - "Stain Brings Pain" ![]() I called Wayne the night before our scheduled trip to inform him that the dam had released after the recent rains, and I was not sure how the conditions would be the next day. He told me he was already in Blacksburg, so we agreed that if the river was safe and not mud, we'd fish. We arrived at the put-in to find the river up several feet and heavily stained. With the low, clear water conditions typical of this spring, I had predicted that the first good rise in water would really turn the fish on. Before Leigh left us at the boat ramp, I told her we would call her to come get us when we caught our 5th citation. Wayne and Leigh both smirked as we embarked on the day. As I rowed out into the river, we were dodging logs, old basketballs, cups, cans, you name it...everything was churned up. To say the bite was ON was an understatement. We hammered the big fish from start to finish catching 10 fish over 19" (and too many 17"-18" to keep count of) with the best five going 21.75"/5lb 2oz, 21.5"/4lb 8oz, 20.75"/4lb 4oz, 20.5"/4lb 2oz, and 20"/4lb. We caught the 5th and last citation of the day as Leigh was backing down to the take-out to pick us up. What a day on the New River!!! 2006-09-24 04:26:28 GMT
