| The New River is an excellent musky fishery and home to the 45lb 8oz Virginia state record musky. Numerous 40"+ muskies are caught each year out of the New River, and as you can see below, we put some admirable muskies in the boat each season here at NROC. |
| At New River Outdoor Company, we take fishing very seriously and targeting muskies specifically is no exception. You need to be in excellent physical shape. You'll be standing and casting 7' Heavy Rods and BIG lures the entire trip. We DO NOT drift live bait for muskies. You also need to be proficient with large baitcasters. There is no way around it. |
| We fish in the cold in February and March for pre-spawn muskies. Cold, wind, and rain triggers HUGE muskies to bite. You will need to be able to handle the weather, and having the right gear is a must. The post-spawn bite starts in the late-May to early-June timeframe. During this period, we may fish early, late, or even at night. It depends on the conditions, weather, water levels, and the moon phases. |
| Going after big muskies is not for the faint of heart or inexperienced fisherman. There are just too many elements involved when targeting these fish. Muskies are plentiful in the New River, but they are not easy. If you are truely serious about pursuing these fish, you need to fish at least two, if not, three consecutive days. Muskies can be non-existent several days in a row, and then you hit a day when every fish in the river is fired up. There is no substitute for time on the water!! |
| We have an excellent musky specific guide here at NROC. He has exclusively targeted big muskies in the New River for last 15+ years. You can not substitute time on the water for these fish, and our lead musky guide has spent countless hours chasing big muskies in the New River with proven results!!! In 2009 alone, he boated over 75 muskies. |
| We furnish all rods, reels, and lures. Most of the lures we use are custom jobs designed specifically for the New River. We guide out of a G3 18' tunnel hull 95/65 jet boat or 16' custom Maravia raft with kicker motor depending on the conditions and type of trip. |
| We are completely catch and release of all species, including muskies. If you want to keep fish, we are not the guide service for you!! |
| We are not into promoting the New River as the best musky fishery on the east coast. That is a very BOLD statement, and not at all fair to the fishery. You will not see us in the magazines or out front pushing the New River as the best musky fishery around. However, when time and our schedules allow, we relish the opportunity to take a limited number of experienced and serious anglers alike on trips for some very awesome river monsters. |
